Product principles

Closer should
still feel safe.

Design commitments · Updated 5 September 2026

Our starting pointA relationship app should create warmth and agency—not pressure, surveillance or guilt.

Consent is individual

Each partner will have a separate account and control their own settings. Joining a couple space, sharing location, receiving signals and publishing a memory should require a clear choice. One partner should never be able to silently switch on another person’s location.

Location is off by default

The intended modes range from off to country, city, approximate distance, precise distance and temporary visit sharing. The backend can calculate distance without displaying coordinates to a partner. Memory locations and current location are treated as separate choices.

No relationship surveillance

  • No hidden tracking mode.
  • No automatic detailed location history.
  • No “last online” status by default.
  • No punishment streaks for missed check-ins.
  • No way to bypass a phone’s Focus, silent or Do Not Disturb settings.

Boundaries are part of the feature

Signals will support quiet hours, rate limits and easy muting. Status sharing will be voluntary and expire automatically. Sensitive changes should be logged and visible to the account owner.

Questions without pressure

The couple quiz is designed for curiosity, not compliance. Every question can be skipped, every answer can remain private, and an answer never means consent to do something. The optional 18+ category stays locked unless each adult independently opts in, and either person can withdraw that choice.

Leaving must be safe

An “Unpair and revoke access” action is planned to end future sharing immediately. Blocking, session revocation, data export and account deletion are requirements for the account system, not optional extras.

Data minimisation

Only data necessary for a chosen feature should be processed. Photo location metadata should be removed by default, location history kept to a minimum, and relationship or location data should not be sold or used for targeted advertising.

Before beta

These are design commitments for a product still under development. They will be translated into tested controls, a full privacy policy, retention periods and incident-response procedures before real couple accounts are invited.
